Attractive Teens Dont Have More Self-Esteem Than Peers
Attractive Teens Dont Have More Self-Esteem Than Peers More in Depression Childhood Depression Causes Symptoms Diagnosis Treatment Types Suicide Its widely believed that beauty and self-esteem go together, but this may not actually be the case for teens, according to a study published in The Journal of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology.?? Photographs of 230 13- to 15-year-olds were rated for facial attractiveness and compared to their levels of self-esteem over five years. They found that the adolescents who were rated as most attractive actually had lower baseline levels of self-esteem than their less-attractive counterparts. Over the course of the study, they found that for most, self-esteem increased and became more stable as the adolescents transitioned into early adulthood, especially for those who reported higher levels of education. Researchers found that girls had lower levels of self-esteem than boys overallâ"and notably, the adolescent girls were rated as more attractive than boys. Why Attractiveness Hinders Self-Esteem The study authors offer several explanations (not explored in their study) as to why more attractive teens might have lower levels of self-esteem: Changes during puberty: They suggest that the more attractive adolescents may perceive the actual or impending changes of puberty as negatively affecting their appearance, while less attractive young adolescents may view these changes as having a positive impact on their appearance.High expectations: Its possible that peers, teachers, and parents often unconsciously expect higher levels of social functioning and academic performance from attractive children. These expectations may be overwhelming for children and create a sense of self-doubt or low self-esteem if they feel they cannot live up to other peoples expectations.Perception of attractiveness: Very simply, young adolescents may have had a different perception of their attractiveness than the research team that rated their photographs. It is likely that many factors contribute to a persons perception of attractiveness, which was not accounted for in the study. Low Self-Esteem and Depression It is thought that low or unstable self-esteem may be a vulnerability for depression. It is also known that during early adolescence when children are often going through puberty, rates of depression increase, especially in girls. One study found that low self-esteem was a predictor for depression in adolescence and young adulthood.?? This suggests that having poor self-esteem can be a risk factor for depression. Its important to know, however, that low self-esteem does not always lead to depression. Certainly, attractiveness does not always lead to depression. However, parents should be aware that a child is susceptible to low self-esteem regardless of appearance and may be especially vulnerable in early adolescence. Talk to your childs pediatrician or another mental health provider if they have low self-esteem and other signs and symptoms of depression, such as: SadnessSocial withdrawalIrritabilityFeelings of guiltAcademic declineUnexplained physical ailmentsAppetite and sleeping pattern changes Providing extra support, encouragement, and love during the sometimes trying early adolescent years can only have a positive impact on your childs development. Are Low Self-Esteem and Depression the Same Thing? How to Spot Low Self-Esteem The teen years are a time of transition and often upheaval. As kids test boundaries and explore their identity, its important for parents and guardians to watch for signs of low self-esteem. But the signs arent always easy to spot. Unfortunately, parents sometimes dismiss symptoms of low-self esteem as normal teenage behavior or adolescent moodiness. Some behaviors to watch for include: Blaming themselves, often excessively, for mistakesHaving a fear of failingAvoiding opportunitiesRefusing to try new thingsPoor social relationshipsBeing unmotivated or disinterestedAn inability to accept compliments or praiseAlways comparing themselves to othersNegative self-talkSelf-critical comments Low self-esteem can manifest in a variety of ways. Some teens may experience anger, lashing out or blaming others to avoid facing their own perceived shortcomings. Others may withdraw and avoid situations that expose them to potential failure or judgment. You know your child best. If you begin to notice patterns of behavior indicating that your teen is feeling unwanted, insecure, or unloved, look for ways to boost your childs self-esteem. Ways to Help Self-esteem takes time to develop and your teen has a whole host of influences that also contribute to their sense of personal worth. The media, friends, family members, co-workers, and their lifetime of personal experiences can all play a part in how teens feel about themselves. Fortunately, there are things that you can do to help teens develop better self-esteem. Model positive self-esteem. Negative thinking often contributes to feelings of low self-esteem. One way to combat this is to talk through things in a way that shows a more positive, healthy approach. Dont engage in negative self-talk in front of your children. Dont just tell your teen to think positive or look on the bright side. Instead, point out aspects of the situation that are a cause for positivity or pride.Talk about it. Be willing to discuss the things that your teen is dealing with. Let them know that you recognize what they are going through. Dont be dismissive or trivialize their feelings.Encourage your teen to focus on strengths. Negative thinking causes people to give too much weight to weaknesses or failures. Instead, make it a point to remind your child of their abilities and strengths. Remind them that their worth is not contingent upon their appearance. Get Help If you are concerned about your teens self-esteem or feel that it is contributing to feelings of depression, dont be afraid to talk to a doctor or mental health professional. Early intervention can provide solutions and ideas that can help improve esteem and address any underlying conditions that might be affecting your childs ability to cope and function. A Word From Verywell The teen years can be turbulent and struggles with identity and appearance can challenge how kids feel about themselves. Parents can help by making sure that their children know a persons value does not hinge on their physical attractiveness. How Teenage Depression Differs From Adult Depression

Feminism at Its Best - 810 Words
Gender roles have transformed throughout time, from the domestic womanhood of the 1920s to the breadwinners of the 21st century. In ââ¬Å"A Jury of Her Peers,â⬠Susan Glaspell articulates the suffrage women of her time had to endure brought on by the weaker sex stereotype that had plagued the human brain for quite some time. Annenberg Learner states that the short story is based on a true event Susan Glaspell had covered in 1900 while working as a reporter for Des Moines Daily News (Annenberg Learner; Glaspell 179). At first, ââ¬Å"A Jury of Her Peersâ⬠was known as a play by Glaspell called ââ¬Å"Trifles.â⬠A year later, Susan Glaspell adapted the play in short story form and titled it ââ¬Å"A Jury of Her Peersâ⬠(Arp and Johnson 550). How to Use a Library for Research
For some students, one of the biggest differences between high school and college is the amount and depth of research that is required for research papers. College professors expect students to be quite adept at researching, and for some students, this is a big change from high school. This is not to say that high school teachers dont do a great job of preparing students for college-level researchââ¬âquite the contrary! Teachers fill a tough and essential role in teaching students how to research and write. College professors simply require students to take that skill to a new level. For example, you may soon discover that many college professors wonââ¬â¢t accept encyclopedia articles as sources. Encyclopedias are great for finding a compact, informative accumulation of research on a specific topic. They are a great resource for finding the basic facts, but they are limited when it comes to offering interpretations of the facts. Professors require students to dig a little deeper than that, accumulate their own evidence from broader sources, and form opinions about their sources as well as the specific topics. For this reason, college-bound students should become familiar with the library and all its terms, rules, and methods. They should also have the confidence to venture outside the comfort of the local public library and explore more diverse resources. Card Catalog For years, the card catalog was the only resource for finding much of the material available in the library. Now, of course, much of the catalog information has become available on computers. But not so fast! Most libraries still have resources that havenââ¬â¢t been added to the computer database. As a matter of fact, some of the most interesting itemsââ¬âthe items in special collections, for instanceââ¬âwill be the last to be computerized. There are many reasons for this. Some documents are old, some are hand-written, and some are too fragile or too cumbersome to handle. Sometimes itââ¬â¢s a matter of manpower. Some collections are so extensive and some staffs are so small, that the collections will take years to computerize. For this reason, itââ¬â¢s a good idea to practice using the card catalog. It offers an alphabetical listing of titles, authors, and subjects. The catalog entry gives the call number of the source. The call number is used to locate the specific physical location of your source. Call Numbers Each book in the library has a specific number, called a call number. Public libraries contain many books of fiction and books relevant to general use. For this reason, public libraries often use the Dewey Decimal System, the preferred system for fictional books and general use books. Generally, fiction books are alphabetized by the author under this system. Research libraries use a very different system, called the Library of Congress (LC) system. Under this system, books are sorted by topic instead of the author. The first section of the LC call number (before the decimal) refers to the subject of the book. That is why, when browsing books on shelves, you will notice that books are always surrounded by other books on the same topic. Library shelves are usually labeled on each end, to indicate which call numbers are contained within the particular aisle. Computer Search Computer searches are great, but they can be confusing. Libraries are usually affiliated or connected to other libraries (university systems or county systems). For this reason, computer databases will often list books that are not located in your local library. For instance, your public library computer may give you a ââ¬Å"hitâ⬠on a certain book. On closer inspection, you may discover that this book is only available at a different library in the same system (county). Donââ¬â¢t let this confuse you! This is actually a great way to locate rare books or books that are published and distributed within a small geographic location. Just be aware of codes or other indication which specify the location of your source. Then ask your librarian about interlibrary loans. If you want to limit your search to your own library, it is possible to conduct internal searches. Just become familiar with the system. When using a computer, be sure to keep a pencil handy and write down the call number carefully, to avoid sending yourself on a wild goose chase! Remember, itââ¬â¢s a good idea to consult the computer and the card catalog, to avoid missing a great source. If you already enjoy research, youll grow to love special collections departments. Archives and special collections contain the most interesting items youll encounter as you conduct your research, such as valuable and unique objects of historical and cultural significance. Things like letters, diaries, rare and local publications, pictures, original drawings, and early maps are located in special collections. Rules Each library or archive will have a set of rules relevant to its own special collections room or department. Normally, any special collection will be set apart from the public areas and will require special permission to enter or to access. You may be required to put most of your belongings into a locker as you enter the room or building where special items are held. Things like pens, markers, beepers, phones, are not permitted, as they could damage delicate collection items or disrupt other researchers. You may find special collections materials by doing a normal library search with index cards, but the search process may differ from place to place. Some libraries will have all the collections materials indexed in their electronic databases, but some will have special books or guides for the special collections. Dont worry, someone will always be on hand to guide you and let you know where to find materials that sound interesting. Some material will be available on microfilm or microfiche. Film items are usually kept in drawers, and you can probably retrieve either of these yourself. Once you find the right film, you will need to read it on a machine. These machines may differ from place to place, so just ask for a little direction. If you conduct a search and identify a rare item youd like to view, you will probably have to fill out a request for it. Ask for a request form, fill it in, and turn it in. One of the archivists will retrieve the item for you and tell you how to handle it. You may have to sit at a specific table and wear gloves to view the item. Does this process sound a little intimidating? Dont be frightened off by the rules! They are put into place so that archivists can protect their very special collections! Youll soon find that some of these items are so intriguing and so valuable to your research that theyre well worth the extra effort.

The information presented on this website shares interventions which are research based with data which has been proven to be effective and reliable across multiple categories. Another resource is the National Intervention Institute in Florida. They have collected and presented a multitude of research supporting the Response to Intervention tiered System academically and behaviorally. I did not find any data on either of these websites for Bal-A-Vis-X. Searching for data and information seemed to come from the founder himself, testimonials of educators and parents, and other graduate students conducting their own research. I felt the information could be bias and not authentic or reliable. I questioned if Bal-A-Vis-X was possibly just another product to entice the movement program generation to incorporate it in their interventions in schools, nursing homes, care facilities and physical therapy centers. Several of the testimonials were extremely emotional and supportive that Bal-A-Vis-X is remarkable in its entirety. Web. 14 Mar. 2018.à Norsworthy, Francis, and Bill Hubert. The Illustrated Bal-A-Vis-X: Rhythmic Balance/auditory/vision Exercises for Brain and Brain-body Integration. Wichita, Kan.: Bal-A-Vis-X, 2009. Print.à The founder, Bill Hubert claims it takes approximately three years to master all the skills of the program. (Hubert, 2007) I started my project first with viewing the first disc in the series of three. Each disc is a video recording of the founder Bill Hubert and his students demonstrating the first foundational exercises. He demonstrates the target skill precisely. He then demonstrates variations of the skill with modifications to accommodate students who struggle with the skill. Bill Hubert strives for three main goals with the program First, it is important to test a student for visual tracking. This is very important for a student to be able to visually track. Starting from the beginning basic skills visual tracking is essential for the student to be able to follow with their eyes the direction of the bean bags or balls while engaging their body in various other movements simultaneously in multiple directions and abilities. The next goal is to have discipline parameters. Classroom management is necessary. Students must be paying attention to the instructor and responding to exactly what is being demonstrated exactly the way it is intended. The student must be able to hear the rhythm of the bean bags slapping, the balls bouncing, and feel the flow from all of the components of the program working together with the student similar to pendulum swinging. When mind and body are working together harmony will occur in the body and mind to create a sense overall balance. In conclusion of training elementary students in the basic skill activities of Bal-A-Vis-X, I have discovered intensive individualized instruction is needed for optimal results. My fidelity of the training was challenged in the setting I provided for the instruction to the participating students. The parameters of what was needed was comprised by instructing in a group setting for the initial training. In addition, I was unaware at first that I would be losing one training a week per grade level due to Keyboarding class at the same time. I had originally planned on the group training two days a week, for sixteen weeks, for fifteen minutes prior to their physical education class. In the beginning I randomly drew from a jar which had each studentââ¬â¢s name printed on it from the targeted grade level fourth, fifth and sixth grades. One group would participate and one group would not participate in Bal-A-Vis-X skills. I administered all students an assessment an oral reading fluency probe and a silent reading comprehension probe. There were no significant positive results from the reading data which validated that Bal-A-Vis-X improved the students reading skills comparing from the beginning to end reading skills assessments. There were no significant differences comparing the Bal-A-Vis-X group to the non-Bal-A-Vis-X group either. Even though I did not get the intended results I was hoping for with this intervention program for reading, I did observe other positive outcomes. These observations were my personal observations from watching the students perform the skills. One observation example was a sixth grade girl with Autism. She is high functioning but just rebuts physical activity. She continually argued how all the skills were stupid or hard. I put her on the end to practice by herself or where I could be her partner. She repetitively could not perform the tasks asked without restarting several times, dropping of the beanbags or balls. She couldnââ¬â¢t balance herself on the board and refused to even try. Each time I worked with her I broke the task down in smaller increments of movements. Eventually, the complaining decreased and she willing participated. One day at recess, which she stands and typically watches her peers play a popular competitive speed basketball game of shooting hoops, she stepped forward and joined. Remarkably, she hit the hoop every time she attempted to hit the hoop. This was a very first for her. She was so excited and her peers even noticed and were awed by her success. This was the first time I saw her happy and excited to engage with her peers in a physical activity. There were a few other coordination observations I made during the sixteen weeks. In knowledge I have obtained from the results first hand from this program, I have decided to peruse professional development of this program so I can teach it more reliably next year. I would like to teach it one on one to my special needs students. Many of the skills taught on the CD disc I personally struggled with performing them myself. I received as much satisfaction from inter personal learning as I did from learning from the students as they were performing the skills. Over all, I cannot say at this time in my personal opinion, observation, and results from reading assessments that Bal-A-Vis-X will improve a studentââ¬â¢s reading performance. However, I have not determined that it is not effective either. I will need more time and specific measurable obtainable data implementing the program in a individualized specialized setting for the best results. How to cite Bal-A-Vis-X, Papers

Public Breast Feeding Essays - Breastfeeding, Health, Midwifery
Public Breast Feeding As I was reading through my classmate's discussions board post, one of them had caught my attention the most because it has become something so controversial. Women breastfeeding has become something wrong to do in public places apparently because for people it something disgusting to do. I find men only saying that they find women breastfeeding disgusting and it is because they do not find that attractive and it is especially young males that think like that because they are not mature enough to see the importance of breastfeeding your child. There was a YouTube video I had watch before of a group of students did a study with two women sitting in a public bench in the mall. One of the women was breastfeeding her kid and the other was a woman wearing a small shirt that showed a lot of cleavage. They were sitting right next to each other and a few men approach to the women breast feeding her kid and started to yell at her calling her disgusting for doing that in public. The women that was showing her cleavage saw that she was getting yelled at by the people she came into her defense and told them if it was ok for to show her cleavage, but it is not ok for a mom to feed her kid. The people stood quite and wouldn't saying about the situation that was happening, but rather say that what the mother was doing is something wrong and she should be doing that in private and that her showing cleavage is ok because it is nothing wrong with that. It sounded like they didn't have any reason on why it was wrong for her to do that. There will be people that you will encounter that will say that breastfeeding is something disgusting but some of them will say that what she's doing is right.
